About Me
Josh Kivlovitz, LCSW, DBT-LBC
(he/him/his)
Welcome! My name is Josh and I am a therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would describe my style as compassionate, straightforward, empowering, and appropriately playful. I am passionate about providing high-quality, evidenced-based mental health treatment that is accessible to all, regardless of background or financial resources. My specialty is working with clients and families who struggle with suicidal thoughts or behaviors, self-harm, complex trauma or personality disorders, and other issues of significant behavioral or emotional dysregulation. I have experience working in community mental health with teens and adults, domestic violence & sexual assault, LGBTQIA+ communities, HIV/AIDS, substance use and harm-reduction, criminal justice re-entry, and unsheltered & homeless services.
My approach to therapy is behavioral. I love to explore with clients how our behaviors are deeply shaped by our emotions, thoughts, and feelings - through which we can build insight into our past and continue to grow from the present moment onward. My clinical specialty is Dialectical Behavior Therapy and I am DBT-Linehan Board Certified, with years of providing DBT individual therapy, group skills training, and family coaching. I have completed additional training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and relationship counseling. I completed both my Bachelor’s of Arts in Sociology and my Master’s of Science in Social Work from The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah’s College of Social Work.
When I’m not providing therapy, you can find me volunteering for our neighbors impacted by the criminal-legal system, hiking or camping, skiing, swimming, or cuddled up with my cat Sammy while reading a book.
